The first thing we do settles whether this is an opener problem at all.
The door gets uncoupled first
With the door supported, we take it off the drive and move it ourselves. Weight in the hand, or a door that sinks when you let go, means the counterbalance has been leaving work for the motor. That is a spring conversation, and plenty of visits stop there.
Then what it is bolted to, then the unit
The header mounting, the sensor brackets, and the circuit come before the motor because, on this stock, they are the likelier answer. Then the unit end to end. A firm figure is quoted before anything is opened up, and the $40 trip charge for a repair estimate visit is waived when you book the work.
Replacement only when the arithmetic says so

The eyes arrived late, and it shows

We find eyes bolted to the track at knee height when the manufacturer's instructions put them within six inches of the floor, wire stapled through its own insulation, and brackets that move a little on each cycle. A door that reverses for no reason is usually one of those, and it is not a fault in the opener.
The header board has taken three different openers
Each drilled its own pattern into the same piece of timber, so the current one is holding in wood that has already taken two sets of lag bolts. That is why a unit which tests fine still shudders on the ceiling.
None of this stops at 1990; it just concentrates there
A newer garage has the same story in a milder form, because sensors, brackets, and wiring get replaced on their own schedule, regardless of the year the house went up. Older just means more layers, which is why we start at the mounting and work inwards.

Not on its own. Volume climbs when a chain slackens, when rollers wear to the pin, or when the header mounting loosens and starts amplifying everything above it. All three are small jobs, and together they make a sound unit feel finished.
The door starts down, then goes back up for no reason. Is the opener failing?

Usually not. That is the safety sensors doing their job, or trying to. On a retrofit, it is nearly always alignment: a drifted bracket, sun across a lens, a staple through the wire. We realign, re-run it, and set them at the height the instructions call for.
Can a wall-mount opener go on any door?

No, and it is worth knowing why early. It drives the torsion shaft directly, so the door needs a torsion setup and clear side room beside the opening. We check both on site.
The noise only bothers us in the room above. Is a new opener really the answer?

Often not. Isolating the rail mounting, adding rubber at the header bracket, and swapping steel rollers for nylon all cut what travels through the structure, and that combination regularly does more than a new motor would. Where it does not, a wall-mount takes the motor off that ceiling entirely.
